Deep Dive

There's a cold email pandemic going on right now, and today I'm addressing the elephant in the room: Is cold email dead, or does it still work in 2024? As someone who runs a cold email agency and has sent over 500,000 cold emails in the past two years, I can assure you that cold email is far from dead.

The Resilience of Cold Email

Despite high bounce rates and low reply rates that many people are experiencing, cold email is still a viable method for booking calls and generating leads. Email remains a fundamental platform for digital communication—it's the first platform where you can communicate digitally, and everyone has an email address. The first email was sent before most of us were born, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Keys to Successful Cold Email Campaigns

The key to successful cold email campaigns is ensuring your emails appear less spammy and are highly relevant. Getting marked as spam hurts your deliverability more than anything else. Here are the critical steps to avoid the spam folder:

  1. Personalize and Differentiate: Make your emails personalized and provide immense value. Pretend you are sending each email manually. This helps in making the email appear as less of a marketing attempt and more of a genuine outreach.

  2. Use Public Infrastructure: Stick to Google and Outlook business accounts. Avoid private infrastructure to minimize the risk of landing in the spam folder.

  3. Proper DNS Setup: Ensure you have the right DNS records set up, including SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. This is fundamental for email authentication.

  4. Warm-Up Period: Warm up your email accounts for at least 14 days before you start sending cold emails. This helps build your sender reputation.

  5. Plain Text Emails: Avoid tracking open rates, click-through rates, or including any HTML, links, or images. Plain text emails are less likely to be flagged as spam.

  6. Unsubscribe Option: Include an unsubscribe text like "Reply to stop receiving these emails" instead of an unsubscribe link. This keeps your email compliant with regulations without triggering spam filters.

Adjusting for 2024's Challenges

Even with best practices, some of your emails might still land in the spam folder. The key is to stay adaptable:

  • Diversify Your Approach: Use both Google and Outlook, and consider using advanced email service providers that tailor emails based on the recipient's email platform.

  • Reduce Volume: Sending fewer emails per domain can help maintain deliverability. The industry standard is 50 cold emails per domain per day, but consider reducing this to 40.

  • Continuous Testing: There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Test different platforms and infrastructures, and adjust based on what works best for you.

Many are panicking and abandoning cold email due to recent challenges. This creates an opportunity for those willing to adapt. Spend more time on research and testing, and don’t fall for quick fixes sold by new gurus. Trust advice from established experts like Nick Abraham, the founder of Smart Lead, Eric, and Matt Lucero.

Cold email remains one of the best ways to generate leads for your B2B business. While diversifying into other methods like paid ads and social media outreach is wise, cold email is here to stay. Adapt or perish—those are your options. Stay resilient, keep testing, and continue providing value in your outreach.

Hope you found this deep dive helpful. Cold email isn't dead; it's evolving, and so should you.
