Why You Shouldn't Outsource Your SMMA Service Delivery

Outsourcing your SMMA (Social Media Marketing Agency) service delivery is a hot topic, but I'm here to explain why it's not a good idea unless you’ve carefully considered multiple factors. My experience in the agency space, although just around two years, has taught me valuable lessons. For those who are relatively new, this advice is crucial.

The Pitfalls of White Labeling

Many people talk about white labeling their services or hiring others to handle the fulfillment while they act as the middleman. However, white labeling as a new business is often the easy way out and doesn’t provide a stable long-term income. I've seen many agency owners make this mistake and end up failing, returning to their 9-to-5 jobs. I even know of a guy who lost $40,000 by trying to drop service his entire SMMA, only to see his savings evaporate in less than a year.

Learn and Implement Yourself

As the founder, it's your responsibility to learn the services you offer, create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and then train employees to handle the tasks. If you’re not the expert in your own service, how can you expect to manage and grow your business effectively? Clients expect you to be knowledgeable about what you offer. Outsourcing right away leaves you with no control over the service delivery. If something goes wrong, you won't be able to fix it, and your clients will notice.

Risks of Outsourcing Overseas

Hiring freelancers from platforms like Fiverr or Upwork often results in poor service quality. These freelancers are juggling multiple clients and won’t give your projects the attention they deserve. This leads to subpar results and high client churn rates. Additionally, if these freelancers decide to leave, you’re left scrambling without any SOPs or knowledge to handle the work yourself.

The Importance of Doing the Dirty Work

Before delegating tasks, you need to get your hands dirty. Understanding the nitty-gritty of your service allows you to create effective SOPs and ensures that you can handle any aspect of the business if needed. This foundation is essential for training employees and maintaining consistent service quality.

Advantages of Handling Service Delivery Yourself

  1. Skill Mastery: You become an expert in your service, which is the core of your business.

  2. Work Ethic: You learn the value of hard work and problem-solving.

  3. SOP Creation: You can create detailed SOPs for future delegation.

  4. Service Control: You can step in if an employee is unavailable, ensuring continuous service delivery.

  5. Client Communication: You can communicate effectively with clients, building trust and loyalty.

  6. Proper Business Management: You learn to run a legitimate business, not just act as a middleman.

Final Thoughts

While there might be rare cases where outsourcing works from the start, it’s generally not advisable for beginners. You need to understand your business inside out before you can effectively delegate tasks. This approach not only ensures better service quality but also prepares you for long-term success.

This perspective comes from my personal experiences and observations. It’s essential to find what works best for you, but starting by mastering your services will always provide a stronger foundation.

I hope this insight helps you avoid the pitfalls of outsourcing too early and guides you towards building a more robust and successful agency. If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to join my school group where we discuss these topics in detail.
